The municipal government is investigating whether it can put the town in a state of calamity to control the spread of avian influenza that is now threatening local quail, chicken and duck farms.
Mayor Sylvia Austria said that the municipal council and members of the local disaster risk reduction and management committee are supporting any measure taken to curb bird flu, leading to 15,000 quails being removed last week in Barangay Ulaning Pitak.
Checkpoints set up to control travelers ‘ entry as a safeguard against the spread of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) have also acted as a bird flu quarantine procedure.
Austria has said that 20 out of 27 villages have quail farms here, which raise one million layer birds. The bulk of the quail farmers are new to the field.
