DAVAO CITY – Mindanao’s first and only five-star hotel founded by the family of Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III announced hat it was indefinitely suspending operations because of the impact of the Coronavirus disease pandemic.

“All of you have been the core and our partners in building Marco Polo Davao. The owners and management will forever be grateful for your unconditional contribution. To all our friends in the community and our valued business partners, daghang salamat (thank you very much) from the Heart of Davao,” The hotel said in a statement.

The closure of the 245-room hotel will have an effect on the 270 workers but management assured the employees that they will received their separation pay and retirement pay for those who are retiring.

President of the Halifax Hotel Davao Francis R. Ledesma said that Marco Polo just could not possibly sustain its operations once these clients leave.

“We don’t know when and in what form are we going to open. We really don’t know,”

“You cannot beat a pandemic,” he added.

The hotel industry may take long to recover even after the quarantine has been lifted but Marco Polo hopes to reopen soon once everything goes back to normal. Davao City currently has the highest COVID-19 cases in the Davao region with total of 152 cases.
