MANILA – General community quarantine (GCQ) in Metro Manila are extended until July 15, President Duterte announced Tuesday night.

The decision was due to the steady rise of coronavirus Covid-19 infection in the capital region. The 15 days extension were approved to better control the health pandemic.

The President made the decision when Covid-19 cases breached the 37,000 mark last Tuesday. UP researchers projected that the number of Covid-19 positive patients may reach 70,000 by the end of the july.

Aside from Metro Manila, other areas that are also under general community quarantine are:

Luzon: Benguet, Cavite and Rizal

Visayas: Leyte, Ormoc,  Southern Leyte, Mandaue City, Cebu, Lapu-Lapu City, Ceb, Talisay City, Cebu, Minglanilla, Cebu and Consolacion, Cebu

Cebu city will remain under the strict enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) as its being tagged as among the emerging hotspots because of the recent spike in infected cases. DILG Interior Secretary Eduardo Año confirmed that the concentration of cases has shifted from Metro Manila to Cebu City.

The government has opted to imposed less stricter lockdown measures even as the rate of infections continues to rise every day.

President Duterte recently assigned Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu to oversee the quarantine of the city of more that 900,000 residents. To date, the country has surged past 37,000 with 1,266 and 10,233 recoveries.
