Datuk Abdul Ghani Salleh is new Election Commission chairman

PETALING JAYA – Datuk Abdul Ghani Salleh has been appointed as the new Election Commission (EC) chairman and Nik Ali Mat Yunus a member of the Commission effective today.

According to Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali, the appointment was consented by Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah. The will serve in the position until they are aged 66, in line with Article 114 of the Federal Constitution.

Mohd Zuki said in a statement that their qualification and experience, they will be able to fully carry out their responsibility as Chairman and member of the Election Commission in accordance with the constitution.

Abdul Ghani also served as the Kuala Langat district council chairman and Gombak district officer before retiring as EC secretary in 2018.

Nik Ali, on the other hand, held the Higher Education Ministry deputy security-general (Development) until his retirement in 2018. They will be replacing Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun and Datuk Seri Ramlan Ibrahim.
