The entertainment industry was rocked when Canadian rapper Tory Lanez was sentenced to 10 years for shooting US artist Megan Thee Stallion in the feet during a drunken argument after a Hollywood party. The event occurred in July 2020, leading to a drawn-out court struggle that recently ended with the punishment.

In the months preceding the incident, Tory Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, and Megan Thee Stallion, whose actual name is Megan Pete, had grown close. In July 2020, a shooting occurred after a party at Kylie Jenner’s mansion. A dispute broke out as Megan, Lanez, his bodyguard, and her companion Kelsey Harris was driving. When Megan insisted on being allowed out of the car, Lanez allegedly aimed a revolver at her and fired while allegedly yelling, “Dance, b**ch.”

Charges against Lanez included assault with a semiautomatic weapon, negligent firearm discharge, and possession of a loaded, unlicensed firearm in a moving vehicle. In its request for a 13-year sentence, the prosecution claimed that Lanez had injured Megan Thee Stallion physically and psychologically. The defence team for Lanez asked for probation or three years in jail with alcohol addiction treatment as a requirement.

Lanez was given a 10-year prison sentence by Los Angeles Judge David Herriford during a drawn-out sentencing process. The victim’s vulnerability and Lanez’s use of a weapon were both noted by the judge as aggravating circumstances. However, contrary to what the prosecution had argued, he did not believe that the crime involved an exceptionally high level of viciousness, cruelty, or callousness.

Megan Thee Stallion asserted during the trial that she had not had “a single day of peace” since the incident in a compelling statement. She further stated the emotional toll the incident had had on her and accused Lanez of making a mockery of her sorrow. In the wake of the shooting, the musician emphasised the difficulties she faced navigating a male-dominated rap scene that appeared to be against her.

An important turning point in their lives and the entertainment industry has been reached with the sentence of Tory Lanez to 10 years in jail for the shooting of Megan Thee Stallion. The case provides insight into the difficulties of interpersonal relationships, the effects of violence, and the continuous fight for equity and justice in the music industry. The aftermath of this episode, which is still impacting, is a sharp reminder of the more significant problems that artists, especially women artists, face in the entertainment industry.
