Coronavirus: 12 detained over fake news

JOHOR BARU – The Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has detained 12 individuals for posting fake and misleading news over the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV).

The MCMC and police are currently investigating over 36 cases of fake news on the coronavirus.

Johor Housing, Communication and Multimedia Committee chairman Dzulkelfy Ahmad has urged the public to visit the service portal, Sebenarnya.my to verify the news story.

Dzulkefly warned that authorities will take action against individuals spreading fake news. The cases were being investigated under Section 233 of the Communication and Multimedia Act 1998 by the MCMC and also under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code.
