In a poignant display of unity and compassion, a diverse gathering of everyday people converged outside the Israeli embassy in Manila to voice their profound disappointment with the Philippine government’s decision to abstain from a pivotal United Nations resolution.

The resolution, calling for a humanitarian truce in Gaza, received an overwhelming global consensus. However, the Philippines’ abstention set it apart as the sole Southeast Asian nation to do so, igniting a spark of determination among its people.

Why did the Philippines Abstain?

Renato Reyes Jr., a passionate advocate from the activist group Bagong Alyanang Makabayan (Bayan), led the way, condemning the abstention as support for “Israel’s occupation and genocide.” For Reyes and the demonstrators, this was not simply a matter of politics; it was a question of moral duty.

The United Nations resolution, securing 120 votes in favor, underscored the dire need for uninterrupted delivery of vital supplies to Gaza and the immediate, unconditional release of captive civilians. It pleaded for a touch of humanity in an embattled region.

This attack led to a tragic loss of life, including three Filipino workers in southern Israel. The DFA argued for a more balanced draft, one that unequivocally condemns Hamas’ terrorist actions.

Emotions ran high as a passionate group of demonstrators embarked on a journey to the embassy, taking a stand for justice. As police intervention sought to disperse the crowd, tensions escalated.

Protesters unfolded mock Israeli flags, symbolizing their longing for an end to the conflict in Gaza and a safe return for displaced Palestinian families. A poignant message resounded: the world must stand with the oppressed, not the oppressors. Their message was one of empathy, a plea for a people enduring unimaginable suffering in a seemingly endless conflict.

Israel’s unwillingness to consider alternatives to the conflict is seen as a more significant act of terrorism compared to Hamas’ attacks.

The protest served as a compelling reminder that political decisions can have human consequences. The passion demonstrated by these protesters transcends borders and political affiliations, reaching into our shared humanity, that innate instinct to stand up for what is right and the yearning for a more compassionate world.

As the Philippines navigates the intricate diplomatic landscape, the protesters’ message resonates as a resounding call for unity and compassion in the face of adversity, transmitting a heartfelt note that transcends international politics.
