The BAFTA Television screen awards rewards the very best of the British broadcasting industry. Since its inception ceremony 65 years ago in 1955 in the United Kingdom, it has spread its wings over and is now telecasted all over the world including North America, South Africa, Norway, and Australia & New Zealand. The BBC Studios ANZ, MBC channels and AlThaqafeya does the broadcasting in the middle east and on 7 cruise ships within the P&O cruise fleet. 

This year’s award ceremony was hosted yesterday at London’s prestigious Royal Hall. The Gala event was star studded as celebrities walked the red carpet and graced the occasion. Comedians Bob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan hosted the event. Before the show started, Baby Reindeer series’s Richard Gadd and Jessica Gunning, Jeff Goldblum, Martyn Freeman were announced as some of the presenters at the show. The nominees were fixed on March, 2024 for this year’s award ceremony, The Crown and The Mirror being the shows that dominated the list with highest number of votes from the jury, 8 and 7 respectively but eventually missed out in bagging the title. 

Other shows that also got a reasonable amount of nominations were Slow horses, Happy Valley and The Sixth Commandment, each getting 6 nominations while shows like The Last of Us and Succession also made it to the list. Succession won one award for Mathew Macfadyen’s supporting role. Heavily watched shows like Beef, Succession, and the Beer were one sided by lesser known French series like Class Act in the International Category.  

Newcomers like Hannah Waddingham, David Tennant, Bella Ramsey and Elizabeth Debicki also were the first time nominees in the prestigious ceremony. Jasmine Jobson secured the title for supporting actress role in Top Boy while the show secured another win for the best drama series. Timothy Spall secured the leading actor for The Sixth Commandment while the show also got the nomination in the best drama series category. 

Squid Game – The Challenge took the award in the reality category, while Strictly Come Dancing won its name in the entertainmentment category. Sarah Lancarshire was awarded the Leading Actress accolade for her performance in Happy Valley, which also won the best memorable moment over David Beckham’s original Netflix Documentary Beckham. 

The show also paid touching tributes to some artists who passed away in the calendar year including Ray Stevenson, Matthew Perry, Annie Nightingale, and others to conclude.
