The world which is now built with the advanced technologies and the influence of AI tech into our routine both personal and professional encounters pros & cons. One of the pivotal cons of this development is the online scam to which increasing numbers of elders are becoming prey to it. They are being trapped emotionally or the sugar-coated words/commercials which circulate on all forms of social media platforms.
Recent Researches over “Online Scams”
The reports of Consumer Sentinel Data Book and the WeAreSocial, which are done annually, have revealed a shocking progress in the population of victims who are predominantly the elderly citizens who get scammed by unknown & fake profiles. They target the healthy financial savings and citizens with good credit scores of the elders. In Vietnam, 79% of the population are consuming the internet in which 49% people are scammed by the online frauds whose age ranges over 55 years. They enlist the mistakes committed by the elders due to ignorance. The estimated money lost to such scams is around $16.23 billion (2023).
- The fraudulers portray themselves as a civil servants or mask up any other guise
- Then they ask the elders to share their personal identities through flattering words.
To prevent this on-going scam from many non-governmental organisations, the Vietnam government & Ministry of Information and Technology has launched many campaigns and programs “Online Fraud Prevention” to educate the people regarding the online scams and prevent them becoming a victim. Amidst all these preventive measures still the traumatic fraudulency continues to pull down an elderly people into a predicament.

Such scams through fake profiles hasn’t left the popular personalities in Vietnam which includes Tan Aizhen, an actress who is now 70 years old, who has shared her bitter experience to the world. She had said that she gave 980,000 Yuan in Taipei and when she decided to give 1.1 million Yuan to the fake prosecutors who contacted her through mobile in September. She was saved from becoming a victim for another time by the police who tracked their moves and arrested them.

While addressing a meet with media today on Saturday the other Taiwanese actor Guo shared his experience of being scammed which was 5 to 6 years ago. The amount which he lost was compared by him as high as a hotel in Taipei East District. He confessed that he was greedy too, which led him to deceive and fell into the snare. In his recent social media post he stated “Scammers really deserve to go to hell”.
“If you want to invest and go to a bank, if you have any questions, go to the police station. There will definitely be no problem” – Guo.
The online scams are becoming a boundless deceit in Vietnam in the recent months.
