For the past few months Bangladesh has been encountering a rally of rebellions against the former Prime Minister Sheik Hasina and a huge event of violence broke out all over the country. Following this, well-known Bangladesh economist and politician, Muhammad Yunus has currently become the interim leader of the country. On December 16, 2024 he announced that,
“Election dates could be fixed by the end of 2025 or the first half of 2026. Throughout, I have emphasised that reforms should take place first before the arrangements for an election. If the political parties agree to hold the election on an earlier date with minimum reforms, such as having a flawless voter list, the election could be held …by the end of 2025” said Yunus
Today, the Election Commission has instructed the new voters to register their names to include in the voters list and they can include their names till December 31, 2024. Also, they are planning to begin the election campaign activities which involves corrections, addition of new voters, and exclusion of outdated voters from the lists. The officials of EC have informed that by January 2, 2025 the updated draft would be released. Voters who were born on or before January 1, 2007 who couldn’t register due to various reasons can utilise this opportunity to add their names into the voters list.
