Bill McCartney died Friday night in Colorado at the age of 84. This Hall of Fame college football coach got his start at as a metro Detroit basketball and football coach. He is also the only high school coach hired as an assistant by Michigan football coach Bo Schembechler.

McCartney died after fighting courageously against dementia. He led the Colorado Buffaloes to their only national football title in 1990. The coach is famous for his unflinching faith, boundless compassion and endless legacy as a leader and mentor.

In 1982, McCartney led a Colorado programme that had been coming off three straight losing seasons. He started turning things around after three more struggling seasons. He got the Big Eight Coach of the Year in 1985 and 1990, besides other accolades.
