On Wednesday, October 12th, a 19-year-old was charged in court with murdering his father two days earlier.
Seah Jie Kai Sylesnar is accused of killing Seah Wee Teck Eddie, 47, between the fourth and fifth floors of Block 653 on Yishun Avenue 4. The conduct allegedly occurred on Oct. 10 at approximately 7.05 p.m.
The police stated in a previous statement that they received a call for assistance at 7:05 that evening.
They discovered the man laying lifeless outside a Yishun Avenue 4 residence. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the site.
He was taken into custody at the site.
The adolescent is represented by Quahe Woo & Palmer attorneys Sunil Sudheesan and Joyce Khoo.
The police prosecutor requested a one-week remand for the suspect, with authorization to take him out for investigations and to return to the scene.
When questioned if a gag order was necessary in reference to the defendant’s siblings, the prosecutor stated that he had not yet received instructions on this matter.
Mr. Sudheesan submitted three requests for varying degrees of access to his client: unlimited access, limited access, and permission to meet with the accused in the company of an investigator to explain his rights.
He stated that he has submitted similar applications many times to District Judge Terence Tay. He stated that he wanted to speak with his client about his legal rights and probable murder charge defenses.
Judge Tay stated that discussing alternative defenses to murder went beyond fundamental procedural rights and questioned how the attorney would brief him if he had not yet received instructions.
The police prosecutor stated that the case was in its infancy and requested that the attorney communicate directly with the investigating officer regarding access, which should only be granted once all investigations have been concluded.
Judge Tay instructed Mr. Sudheesan to submit written arguments to the prosecution by this afternoon. He requested that the prosecution have a deputy public prosecutor attend and deferred the hearing until Thursday morning for discussions regarding the defense attorney’s access to the minor.
If convicted of murder, the kid could face the death penalty.
