At the heart of most people who think of beauty contests are gowns, make-up, and glittering crowns. The backstage is a different world-one that veers toward hard work, intense pressure, and growth.

A powerful documentary titled A Queen’s Runway takes us deep inside the Miss Universe Philippines competition arena. Directed by the 23-year-old Belgian filmmaker Tom Sys, it showcases contestants who are under preparation for one of the biggest moments in their lives for three and a half months.

More than just rehearsals and catwalks are showcased. The documentary captures the highs and lows-adjusting dresses, honing speeches, taking in critiques, and fighting self-doubt. The journey speaks honestly about what it takes to get to that stage.

Tom Sys, co-founder of a creative studio with Erik Sopracasa, who has worked on other projects like Beyond The Curtain, says this film is proof that passion and conviction can move mountains-even in the face of obstacles like the lack of funding.

Property of Another World: A Space for Growth

Winning beauty pageants today goes well beyond the beauty of the individual. It encompasses building confidence concerning public appearances, learning about speaking, and motivating others on causes that touch a contestant’s heart. In some contests, considerations such as protecting the environment and community welfare become pertinent for contestants who wish to advocate on issues standing beyond being just a pretty face.

These platforms are also changing the views of traditional definitions of beauty. Women of every form and size, belief system, and culture step forward to show that beauty comes in many forms and is about standing for oneself.

Beyond-Transformation on Stage

Winning the crown looks good, but the real prize lies in the journey. With experience, contestants walk out empowered, confident, and oftentimes with a clearer sense of their purpose. They learn to tackle challenges while being true to themselves and inspiring others along the way.

The Crowning of Empowerment

A Queen’s Runway opens a universe in the pageant world. Underneath the glitter lies passion, resolve, and room for growth. These ladies are not just walking on stage; they are walking into their power, and that in itself is so beautiful.
