“Adik Sayang Mama” or I love you mama in Malay were Shahrul Kamal Roslan’s last words to his 67-year-old mother before the pilot was killed in an air crash near the capital on Thursday. The Beechcraft Model 390 aircraft exploded into a fireball on impact, killing all eight people on board.
His mother Mahanum Ismail said her son’s last words kept playing over and over in her mind. “He was a mama’s boy and the last time I spoke to him was when I was admitted to the hospital,” she said while holding back her tears outside a forensic department.
The pilot left behind his wife and four sons. The state government will bear the expenses of funeral management and burial for all the victims of the plane crash, Chief Minister Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail told reporters.
Two motorists on the four-lane road also got killed in the incident. On Friday, Malaysian air accident investigators were analysing the cockpit voice recorder (CVR), which records conversations of the flight crew and other sounds in the cockpit.
The crashed aircraft accommodated a CVR only and didn’t have a flight data recorder, according to Malaysian police chief Razarudin Husain. He said search operations were almost complete and all human remains of the victims had been recovered.
The aircraft took off from Langkawi and was on its way to Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Selangor. In 1977, a Japan Airlines plane heading to Singapore crashed near the site of Thursday’s accident, killing 34 people. 45 other passengers survived the disaster.
