MANILA – Tropical depression Ambo maintained its strength on Monday evening and is expected to brings rains in different parts of the country this week, the state weather bureau said Tuesday.
The Philippines’ first storm in 2020 was 330 km east of Surigao del Sur as of 3pm Monday with maximum sustained winds of 55 km per hour near the center. It continues to move slowly, heading northwest in the general direction of Bicol and Eastern Visayas.
Signal No. 1 could already be raised in parts of Eastern Visayas today (Tuesday) in anticipation of the typhoon. The local government units and residents would be given lead time of 36 hours to prepare.
Ambo is forecasted to pass north of Metro Manila on Friday or Saturday towards the West Philippine Sea. While bracing for Ambo, the Philippine is working to contain the COVID-19 pandemic. Metro Manila has been put under “enhanced community quarantine” since March 17. President Rodrigo Duterte is expected to make a decision on whether to extend it past May 15.
