Young Filipino Christian Gian Karlo Arca Beats Top German Chess Player in Big Bangkok Win

Filipino FIDE Master Christian Gian Karlo Arca who is 16 years old won a major victory by beating German Super Grandmaster Jan Gustafsson at the 22nd Bangkok Chess Club Open at the Royal Orchid Sheraton Riverside Hotel in Thailand.

Arca, from Panabo City, Davao del Norte was playing the white pieces and won after 39 moves in a Reti Opening. His win puts him among the leaders of the tournament with a record of 3.0 points. Arca revealed his dreams, saying “I hope I can maintain my good performance so I can maybe achieve an IM norm or GM norm.”

Arca’s chess career is filled with impressive titles such as winning the FIDE World Youth Blitz Chess Championship in 2023 and winning various medals in the Asian Schools Chess Championships.

GM Jan Gustafsson is his opponent who is an experienced player with a highest FIDE rating of 2652. Gustafsson has played for Germany in several international events and has served as a second to World Champion Magnus Carlsen in several title defenses.

Other Filipino participants also played well in the tournament. IM Michael Concio Jr. beat CM Benhood Delavari of Iran and IM Paulo Bersamina beat fellow countryman Marc Kevin Labog, both joining Arca at the top of the board.

In the Challenger section, Filipinos WNM Arvie Lozano, John Paul De Guzman and Remark Bartolome went undefeated in three rounds, tied with the Myanmar, Vietnamese, Indonesian, and Russian players.​

Arca’s victory over a highest seeded grandmaster highlights the emerging pieces in Philippine chess and potraits a bright future for the young master.
