Army launches program to boost farming in camps

MANILA – Philippine Army are boosting the farming and production of foods in an effort to further develop the agricultural sector and help the country’s food security brought upon the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to Army spokesperson Col. Ramon Zagala, The program called “Green Camp” is a project with coordination with the Department of Agriculture (DA) and Tarlac Heritage Foundation Inc. (THF) aim to develop the Army’s food self-sufficiency for a possible shortages due to the health crisis.

The partnership of Department of Agriculture (DA) and Tarlac Heritage Foundation Inc. (THF)  was signed by Army vice commander Maj. Gen. Reynaldo Aquin and will be implemented in all army camp through out the country.

All Army camps nationwide are maintaining model farms toward sustainable approach to self sufficiency, which in the future can have the possibility of mitigating the food shortages.

Agriculture Secretary William Dar warns of the threat of Covid-19 pandemic on shortening the country’s food supply. He is confident that with the cooperation of different agencies, the country can win the war against hunger through strengthening the Philippine agriculture.

Last April, the Army 2nd Infantry Division was able to convert two hectares of Camp Capinpin into a farmland with the purpose of keeping the community afloat during the implementation of Enhanced Community Quarantine.
