As Hollywood returns to the Golden Globes, ‘Elvis’ and ‘Avatar’ face off

The dazzling Elvis biographical and the sci-fi blockbuster Avatar: The Way of Water will compete for the top award at the Golden Globes on Tuesday, January 10, when stars return to an event attempting to recover its reputation following scandals.

The Golden Globes will return to television after celebrities and NBC abandoned the 2022 presentation due to ethical issues at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), the organization responsible for presenting the awards.

A larger and more diverse membership and other modifications by the HFPA persuaded many of the greatest names in film and television to support this year’s celebration, which generates attention for winners and nominees and frequently improves their prospects at the Academy Awards.

Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, and Viola Davis, filmmakers James Cameron and Steven Spielberg, and Elvis star Austin Butler, a frontrunner for best actor, are anticipated to walk the red carpet.

The event will be live on Comcast’s NBC and Peacock beginning at 8:00 p.m. ET / 5:00 p.m. PT.

Elvis is up against The Way of Water, the long-awaited Avatar sequel that is blazing up the box office; Steven Spielberg’s coming-of-age picture The Fabelmans; and Tar, featuring Cate Blanchett as a scheming orchestra conductor for the top drama film award.

Top Gun: Maverick is also in contention, though its prospects are likely diminished by Tom Cruise’s return of his Golden Globe statues in protest in 2021, according to Beachum.

Cruise reacted to a Los Angeles Times investigation that found the HFPA does not employ any Black journalists and accused its members of requesting favors from celebrities and film companies. He is not anticipated to attend Tuesday’s performance.

The Banshees of Inisherin, which has more nominations than any other film, is considered to be the frontrunner for best comedy or musical picture.

The three-hour celebration will be hosted by comedian Jerrod Carmichael, and Eddie Murphy will receive an award for lifetime achievement. Presenters include director Quentin Tarantino and actor Jamie Lee Curtis.

In addition, actor Sean Penn will offer a video message from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

Abbott Elementary has the most nominations in television categories and is a frontrunner for best comedy.

Roughly 200 worldwide film industry journalists and others voted for this year’s Globes. According to the HFPA, over 52 percent of these voters are racially and culturally diverse, including 10 percent who are Black.
