Cambodia’s last Covid-19 patient leaves hospital, no cases for weeks

Phnom Penh – Cambodia said on Saturday that the last of 122 people in the country who tested positive for the coronavirus has been discharged from medical treatment.

The kingdom has detected no new cases of the virus for more than a month.

The Health Ministry said that the last patient discharged from the the Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital was a 36-year-old woman from northwest Banteay Meanchey province’s Poipet City.

Despite no new cases recorded, The Ministry of Health urged the people to remain vigilant and cautious in order to avoid a second wave of infections.

“Despite all COVID-19 patients cured and no new cases reported, there are still risks of new infections because countries in the region and in the world still see an increase in new cases of infections,” Health Ministry’s secretary of state and spokeswoman Or Vandine said in a statement.

The spokeswoman urged the people to continue wearing facemask, practice social distancing and washing hands with alcohol frequent to lessen the spread of the virus.

Health Minister Mam Bunheng said that since most of the cases were generally imported, they need to focus more on the checkpoints at the border, at airports, at ports, at land checkpoints.

“People who travel from overseas must have a clearance/certificate that they don’t have COVID-19. And once they are in, they will be quarantined for another 14 days,” he added. Cambodia has tested 14,684 samples of suspected cases. The country currently has 122 confirmed cases with 122 recoveries and zero deaths.
