According to the hospital’s director on Wednesday, a Chinese national under investigation for suspected novel coronavirus infection has died in San Lazaro Hospital.

San Lazaro Hospital director Dr. Edmundo Lopez stated at a press briefing with officials from the Department of Health that it was not known if the 29-year-old male patient died of nCoV.

Lopez said the cause of death for the patient had been pneumonia. He noted that the patient had also twice tested positive for HIV screening tests.

The specimen from the deceased Chinese national, who had come from the Yunnan province of China, is still being tested for possible infection with nCoV.

The spokesperson for San Lazaro Hospital, Dr. Ferdinand de Guzman, dismissed it as fake news in a text message but did not disclose any further details.

According to the DOH, as of Wednesday 23 individuals are under investigation in the country for suspected novel coronavirus infection. Four others have been released but health authorities will continue to monitor them
