Covid-19: Thailand eases lockdown measures

BANGKOK – The streets of Bangkok has returned to business as usual with people resuming their exercise routines in parks, getting haircuts at salons and dining out in restaurants as Thailand begins to ease restrictions on Sunday due to the low cases of new Covid-19 infections reported in the past week.

Businesses such as small retailers, street food stalls and restaurants outside shopping malls, and parks and outdoor sports facilities have started re-opening nationwide. Department stores, movie theaters, gyms and spas will remain close to ensure there are no large gatherings.

However, nighttime curfew and alcohol ban will stay until the end of May and will be subject to further study according to Mr Taweesin Wisanuyothin of the government’s Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration.

Mr Taweesin said that the restrictions will ease further if the number of infections stays stable. If cases rises to double or triple digits again, the government will reassess the restrictions and guidelines. Thailand was the first country outside China to record a case of the Covid-19.
