In response to suggestions for the Democratic Action Party (DAP) to amend its constitution to appeal to Malay voters, DAP central executive committee (CEC) member Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali clarified that the party’s “Malaysian Malaysia” slogan, enshrined in Clause II of its constitution, does not violate the Federal Constitution.
Sheikh Umar emphasized that the “Malaysian Malaysia” spirit is aligned with the essence of the Federal Constitution. He pointed out that elements such as the Malay language, Malay privileges, religion, and more are explicitly provided for in the Federal Constitution, ensuring that the slogan should not be perceived as a threat to the diverse cultures of the country.
Sheikh Umar, who also serves as the Johor DAP vice-chief, highlighted that DAP adhered to the requirements for the registration of an organization and has followed the Federal Constitution since its formation. He underlined that DAP remains a legitimate political party, actively participating in general elections.
The debate around DAP’s principles and alliances with other parties is not new. Previously, PAS and DAP were partners in the Pakatan Rakyat coalition, which preceded the current ruling Pakatan Harapan. The relationship between PAS and DAP has evolved over the years, with differences emerging on issues like secularism.
Notably, Umno supreme council member Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed urged DAP, the party’s new ally, to amend its constitution to gain support from Malay voters. He cited concerns about DAP’s perceived “extreme” views on a secular state and the “Malaysian Malaysia” slogan. However, DAP’s constitution describes the Federal Constitution as secular and advocates for national integration to build a united Malaysian Malaysia.
Since joining the unity government, DAP and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim have affirmed their respect for the positions of Malays, Islam, and Malay Rulers in the country. This commitment reflects their dedication to maintaining harmony and unity in the diverse Malaysian society.
