This Saturday, Estoril Praia, one of the best football teams in Portugal will wear a notable green and yellow kit inspired by the Brazilian national flag to pay tribute to the 40th anniversary of Ayrton Senna’s historic Formula One Grand Prix victory. The tribute comes on their Primeira Liga fixture against Braga. The color choice is in remembrance of Senna’s signature helmet and his strong association with the Estoril track where he recorded his groundbreaking victory in 1985 against adverse weather conditions.
As an expression of that admiration, Senna’s nephew Bruno recently drove Senna’s 1985 Estoril Grand Prix winning Lotus Type 97T at a demonstration during the Goodwood Festival in England. The car will also appear on display at the Estoril circuit after the match.
Remembering Ayrton Senna’s Legacy:
Ayrton Senna is largely considered to have been one of the greatest drivers in Formula One history. Senna’s sublime talent especially on wet roads and passion for the sport were rewarded with three world titles with McLaren. Senna secured his first victory at the Portuguese Grand Prix in Estoril in 1985, as he dominated proceedings amid heavy rain to take the win, finishing more than a minute in front of the second placed driver.
Aside from his on-track accomplishments, Senna was a well known philanthropist, donating greatly to charities for children in Brazil. His philanthropic work is carried on by the Ayrton Senna Institute which prioritizes education and social improvement.
Estoril Praia’s tribute reminds people of Senna’s lasting legacy in motorsport and his unique connection to Portugal.
