grab holdings acquires chope to finally offer in app restaurant reservations

Ride-hailing and delivery powerhouse Grab Holdings Ltd. acquired Chope, a restaurant reservation system based in Singapore, for an unknown fee. Grab is using this deliberate action to enhance its service portfolio in front of increasing competition for customer acquisition.

Grab’s array of products includes dinner bookings, therefore it can more competitively attack regional rivals including GoTo Group and Line Man Wongnai in key markets including Singapore, Indonesia, and Thailand. Deal verified by officials from Grab and Chope, which the Business Times first reported about.

Opening Outside Basic Services

Serving around 650 million people, Grab is widening its focus outside of its primary ride-hailing and food delivery companies in order to boost profit margins in the fiercely competitive Southeast Asian market. Chope’s restaurant booking system has become somewhat well-known in the area even though it too faces fierce competition.

“Given today’s tough and competitive market, we sought a partner to help us explore new opportunity for sustainable development,” said Chope founder Arrif Ziaumeen in a statement. “After looking at likely buyers, Grab fit the best.”

Operational Integration

As part of the deal Grab will buy Chope’s companies in Singapore, Indonesia, and Thailand. According to an internal email from Grab’s head of delivery, which the Business Times quotes, Chope employees will be visiting Grab’s headquarters a few weeks. The integration won’t result in any job losses at Grab; Chope’s crew will work under Omnicommerce segment of the company.

Strategic Authority

Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Nathan Naidu noted that if Chope, almost profitable, were bought, Grab’s positive adjusted EBITDA wouldn’t suffer. Chope’s 10,000-store network will rather enhance GrabFood’s over 200,000 environment, so boosting outdoor dining advertising revenues.

This latest acquisition helps Grab’s already strong foothold in the local ride-hailing and food delivery sectors. Underlining ongoing industry consolidation efforts, Bloomberg earlier this year observed that GoTo of Grab and Indonesia had started discussing a prospective merger of their respective primary businesses.

Lastly

Grab Holdings bought Chope in a deliberate step to increase and expand its service offers among fierce competition. Combining Chope’s restaurant booking tools will let Grab give its clients a more whole platform, therefore enhancing its market situation and supporting sustainable development in Southeast Asia. This acquisition not only expands Grab’s ecosystem but also underlines its commitment to innovation and flexibility in a business undergoing fast transformation.
