Humanitarian Legacy: UAE’s Foreign Aid Totals AED 360 Billion Since 1971

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has established itself as an icon of humanitarian assistance and development with foreign aid donations exceeding AED 360 billion (USD 98 billion) since it was established in 1971. These efforts have improved millions of people’s lives by addressing poverty, disasters and emergencies while also promoting economic and social growth around the world.

The UAE has promoted humanitarian solidarity as a fundamental national value since its founding. Innovative programs like the AED 1 billion Mother’s Endowment and the AED 20 billion Erth Zayed Philanthropies which sustainably promote education and community development worldwide further solidified this legacy in 2024.

Some of the important recent projects consist of Lebanon, H.H. Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak has allocated USD 100 million for humanitarian efforts to address continuing issues including 240 tonnes of aid for women, Sudan, $100 million has been committed for conflict rehabilitation and humanitarian assistance and for Gaza Strip, Complete aid activities and medical treatment for 1,000 cancer patients and injured youngsters. 

Furthermore the UAE’s dedication to international unity and peace is shown by its humanitarian efforts in Latin America. Like for Argentina, Sustainable development has been promoted via renewable energy partnerships made possible by the Abu Dhabi based International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). Furthermore the UAE has also offered disaster assistance amid severe droughts and floods.

For Brazil to support Brazil’s healthcare system during the COVID-19 pandemic, the UAE sent vital medical supplies including personal protective equipment (PPE). Goals for food security are further lined up with support for sustainable agriculture.

And for Venezuela, through agencies like the UN World Food Programme and Red Crescent Societies, the UAE has contributed food and medical aid to Venezuela in response to the country’s long lasting economic and humanitarian crises. Additionally by providing funds for shelters, medical care and basic necessities, the UAE has assisted Venezuelan refugees in nearby nations.

The UAE’s USD 100 million pledge to fight poverty and hunger through the Global Alliance against Hunger demonstrates its priority on sustainability. Similarly, through the Global Institute for Disease eradication (GLIDE), the “Reaching the Last Mile” health project has donated AED 55 million to disease eradication activities.
