Indian woman jumps to death from Royal Caribbean Cruise sailing through Singapore Strait

An Indian woman, Reetha Sahani, onboard the Royal Carribbean Cruise (Spectrum of the Seas) has died after reportedly jumping from the vessel when it was sailing through the Singapore Strait from Penang, the northern island state of Peninsular Malaysia.

The 64-year-old’s son, Apoorv, had earlier asked for assistance from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and the Ministry of External Affairs in finding his mother after he claimed in a tweet the cruise staff had not released the CCTV footage and were “washing their hands off”.

In an update, Apoorv informed his mother died and that a search operation is underway to locate her body. The cruise company shared the surveillance footage after relentless efforts, he added. Reportedly, the woman didn’t know how to swim.

Son Claims Cruise Company Didn’t Even Launch A Rescue Operation

Apoorv thanked the PMO, Foreign Minister S Jaishankar and the Indian Embassy in Singapore for helping him. He earlier claimed the cruise staff didn’t carry out any rescue operation to find her mother and even off-boarded his father from the vessel.

Meanwhile, the Indian High Commission is in constant touch with the family since the devastating news surfaced and is in contact with authorities in Singapore to address related issues. They have also asked for support from the Indian head of the Royal Caribbean Cruise.

A report from The Straits Times said Jakesh woke up on Monday to find his wife missing from their room. He searched for her everywhere on the ship but couldn’t locate her despite relentless efforts. Keep an eye out on The Asian Affairs for further updates on the incident.
