Indonesia has three priorities for MIKTA chairmanship

Tri Tharyat, Director General for Multilateral Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) of the Republic of Indonesia, revealed that his country has set three priorities during its chairmanship of MIKTA (Mexico, Indonesia, South Korea, Turkey, and Australia) this year.

During an online discussion held by the Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia (FPCI), he said that “our leadership is pursuing three priorities.”

Tri Tharyat said that Indonesia would pursue efforts to strengthen multilateralism, achieve an inclusive recovery, and support digital transformation.

The Indonesian minister further said, “MIKTA will always be guided by shared values such as democracy, respect for international rules, and multilateralism.”

MIKTA is a partnership between Mexico, Indonesia, South Korea (Republic of Korea), Turkey, and Australia. It is led by the Foreign Ministers of these five nations. It aims to support effective global governance. It also promotes global peace, security, and prosperity.

MIKTA was established in the year 2013 on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York City, the most populous city in the United States. The leaders of Mexico, Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, Turkey and Australia also met on the sidelines of the Bali G20 (Group of 20) Summit hosted by Indonesia last year.

During its leadership of MIKTA this year, the Republic of Indonesia will pursue the three priorities. The sustainable development goals (SDGs) will also be discussed.

Earlier this year, MIKTA nations agreed on more cooperation to tackle global challenges. The 8th MIKTA Speakers’ Consultation was held in Istanbul, Turkey. Parliament speakers of MIKTA talked about global challenges and discussed the importance of promoting multilateralism.

Reportedly, a joint declaration after the 8th MIKTA Speakers’ Consultation in Istanbul read, “We noted with appreciation the humanitarian approach of Turkey, the country hosting the largest number of refugees in the world.”
