“We stand ready to give Malaysia any additional support that we may be able to provide should the country request it,” he said in a written response to a parliamentary question about the flooding in Malaysia.
This statement was issued as a response when Balakrishnan was asked if the government of Singapore is making any steps in order to give assistance to the Malaysians who have been impacted by the floods that happened just recently.
He also noted in his response that Singapore stands in solidarity with Malaysia at this difficult moment that the country is going through.
In December 2021, the minister has notified his counterpart, who is Datuk Seri Saifuddin Abdullah, that he had written to express condolences to all that was affected while also offering help coming from Singapore.
Balakrishnan said on December 22 that the Singapore government has also provided a total amount of US$60,000 (RM251,160), which is a seed money to the Singapore Red Cross’ public fundraising efforts in its objective to help with the disaster relief and recovery operations both in Malaysia and in the Philippines, which had been hit by the Typhoon Rai.
He noted that the Singapore government’s donation topped up the Singapore Red Cross’ US$50,000 promise to the Malaysian Red Crescent, that went towards the emergency healthcare and relief supplies distribution to the evacuation centers.
Malaysia had flooding in Kuala Lumpur and nine other states in December 2021 and early January 2022. Many people have died as a result of the floods in Malaysia, and property has been destroyed in large quantities, inflicting hardship and suffering to the afflicted populations
