PETALING JAY – A Malaysian uploaded a post about his conversation with his neighbourhood Chicken rice seller that went viral on Facebook.
Filmmaker Gary Chong stopped by to get some takeaway lunch and talked to their local coffee shop hawker and gerai makan.
The hawker revealed to him how his earnings was affected by the MCO. Chong discovered that the man has been working 16 hours a day just to make up to RM180 a day.
“While going about his usual way of preparation, he started revealing that his daily sales now are only around RM140 but he has to open shop daily from 7am to 11pm.”
“He continued that if the business went on for two more weeks like this, he would have to shut up shop.”
Chong said that the hawker then begged him to come back that evening and buy another meal from him to sustain his business.
“It was at that moment I realised that all sectors are hit badly because of this MCO, but the small coffee shop hawkers and gerais are taking the hardest hit.” he added.
Under the MCO, Food supply sectors and its chain of essential services can operate as usual through out the period but restaurants can no longer serve dine-in customers and can only offer takeaways and food deliveries to lessen the spread of the virus. The filmmaker then urged the public to support their local hawker and food stall businesses during the MCO.
