Mason Greenwood to leave United after internal investigation

Following his arrest in January 2022 over allegations surrounding material published online and subsequent dropping of charges, including attempted rape and assault, on February 2023, Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood will leave the club by mutual agreement.

It follows a six-month internal probe into the 21-year-old England international, who was previously counted among the most valuable players in Europe’s top five leagues. Greenwood, whose contract at Old Trafford runs until 2025, could now be sold or loaned to another club.

While he remains on full pay, the player will not return to training with the club. In a statement, United stressed all the parties involved recognise the difficulties with Greenwood “recommencing” his career at the club.

Greenwood’s Years-Long Time At United Comes To An End

The material previously posted online did not offer a full picture, United added, highlighting their conclusion based on the available evidence that Greenwood “did not commit the offences in respect of which he was originally charged.”

Meanwhile, the player accepted he had “made mistakes” in a statement, but added he didn’t do the things he was accused of. Extending gratitude to the club, his family and loved ones for their support, he said “the best decision” is for him to continue his career away from Old Trafford.

Greenwood was charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and even assault in October 2022. Following his arrest, Electronics Arts removed him from active squads on its FIFA 22 game, with Nike ending its sponsorship deal with the player.

While an announcement on the internal probe’s outcome was expected before United’s opening Premier League game of the season against Wolves on August 14, the decision got delayed amid serious debate over the footballer’s potential reintegration into the club.
