MANILA – Metro Manila mayors unanimously recommending to the national government to ease COVID-19 mitigation measures in the region from modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) to general community quarantine (GCQ) on June 1, Metro Manila Development Authority General Manager Jojo Garcia announced Tuesday.

Garcia said the mayors agreed on the recommendation on the intention on reviving the economy. All 17 mayors are recommending to the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases to ease quarantine restrictions and allow more businesses to reopen in efforts to revive the econmy.

“Nakikita ng mayors natin na kailangan nang tumakbo ng ekonomiya natin,” Garcia said.

Garcia however stressed that mayors would need to formulate policies that would prevent the spread of Covid-19. One example would be a more concentrated area lockdown.

The recommendation, however, will need to be approved by the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) on Emerging Infectious Diseases.

“We trust the wisdom of the IATF and whatever decision that they will do, definitely we will follow,” Garcia added.

To date, there are over 14,000 positive cases of Covid-19 in the Philippines with over 800 deaths and 3,000 recoveries. Metro Manila is currently under modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) until May 31.
