More than 600 Malaysians have registered with the Malaysian Embassy in Myanmar.

KUALA LUMPUR – There are currently more than 600 Malaysians registered with the Malaysian Embassy in Yangon, Myanmar, most of whom are businessmen and professionals employed with different companies, and a few of whom are with their families, the Malaysian Embassy in Myanmar said.

The Embassy advised all Malaysians in Myanmar to remain calm, alert and to continue to comply with local authorities’ safety advice regarding the country’s ongoing security situation.

According to the Malaysian embassy in the capital, since 5.30am (Feb 1) there has been an interruption to mobile internet services, but it was restored by noon, while the banking sector ceased operations due to reduced internet activity.

“A few Malaysians have called the embassy for advice since this morning (yesterday) (on the ongoing security situation in Myanmar) and the embassy has responded accordingly”, the embassy said in a reply statement to Bernama on Monday (Feb 1) night via email.

Commenting further, the Embassy reported that the situation in Yangon has remained calm until now, with Yangon International Airport closed until further notice for both international and domestic operations.

“The embassy is still gathering information on other parts of the country, ” the embassy said.

International media announced that the country had been taken over by Myanmar’s powerful military in a coup and declared a state of emergency for a year, followed by the arrest of political leaders and other senior government officials on charges of suspected voting fraud in the November 2020 election.

According to the Malaysian Embassy in the same (reply) statement (to Bernama), since 5.30 a.m. yesterday, there has been an interruption of the mobile Internet, which has been restored by midday, while the banking sector has ceased operations due to limited Internet activity. “However, in mid-day, people were seen queuing at the Automated Teller Machines (ATMs), ” it added.
