Royal Malaysian Navy, or TLDM, as it is popularly known, is advancing toward the commissioning of its Naval Region 4 Headquarters (Mawilla 4) located at Muara Tebas, revealed Armed Forces Chief, Jen Datuk Mohd Nizam Jaffar.
Several factors, including cost evaluation and assessment of facilities, made Muara Tebas a more convenient site than the originally planned Bintulu.
“After looking carefully at the different costs and feasibility as well as infrastructure, we determined Muara Tebas would be the best option for this new TLDM base,” Jen Mohd Nizam said during a briefing after his working visit to the Tactical Headquarters in Balai Ringin.

A preliminary discussion with the Sarawak state government has confirmed the mutual agreement to relocate said base. “Choosing Bintulu makes the maintenance cost prohibitively expensive; therefore, Muara Tebas becomes the alternative and preferred viable cost option,” he added.
This future naval base to be set at Muara Tebas is touted to be among the most advanced naval facilities within Sarawak and designed to match the capabilities of of the TLDM base in Teluk Sepangar, Sabah.
According to Jen Mohd Nizam, the Armed Forces intend to visit the site in Muara Tebas soon to move forward with the project, adding that having a TLDM base in Sarawak had strategic significance.
Regarding the topic of border security, Jen Mohd Nizam voiced the need for balanced control posts between Malaysia and Indonesia. He stated that up until now, there are five joint posts between Malaysia and Indonesia and suggested an assessment for possible joint posts to be set up, which is expected to strengthen border security efforts further.
“Facilities at ICQ complexes along the border, as important facilities, will also be evaluated to ensure that they meet necessary standards,” concluded him.
