After receiving complaints that a student at Maitland Grossmann High School had been abused by a male instructor, the police were summoned to the school on Tuesday afternoon.
According to a statement released by the police on Wednesday, “the adolescent male was evaluated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics, however, he was not physically hurt.”
Around 9:30 o’clock in the evening, the 62-year-old male instructor was taken into custody and eventually charged with simple assault.
After a video was shared on social media showing the boy being grabbed by the collar during a classroom altercation that escalated after scrunched-up balls of paper were thrown across the classroom, Opposition Leader Chris Minns was questioned about the incident. The video in question showed the boy being grabbed by the collar during the altercation.
Minns stated this on Wednesday’s episode of Nine’s Today show, saying, “I don’t know the circumstances.”
He remarked, “There has never been so much demand on teachers as there is today.”
“It is essential to have discipline in the classroom. One component of this is making sure that when teachers or principals make a call, they have support behind them.”
“If there are instances of it occurring inside the education system in New South Wales, we need to make sure that the teachers have support.”
The educator was released on bail with conditions and is scheduled to appear in Maitland Local Court on April 6.
Investigations are being conducted by the Department of Education.
