The Philippines has upgraded its relationship with South Korea. This happened after Marcos and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol met. According to the news sources South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol arrived at the Malacañang Palace on Monday morning as part of his state visit to the Philippines.
This news was announced and confirmed by the official press release by the Philippines communications office.
During their talks, the leaders of both nations addressed regional issues such as the South China Sea and the Korean peninsula. They also signed agreements on coast guard cooperation and nuclear energy.
President Yoon emphasized that South Korea would support the modernization of the Philippine military, strengthening their security ties. Both leaders affirmed their commitment to a rules-based international order, particularly in ensuring safe navigation in the South China Sea. They also agreed to oppose North Korea’s nuclear program and condemn its provocations.
According to the official press release by the Philippine government President Yoon told President Marcos, “And today, we are elevating our relationship to a Strategic Partnership, which will bring our cooperation to a higher level.”
South Korean leader Yoon further said, “I hope that my State Visit will serve as an opportunity to not only further enhance our trade and economic cooperation, but also widen the scope of our partnership to include future-oriented sectors such as security, digital technology, and energy.”
In his remarks, President Marcos said the Philippine government is looking forward to President Yoon’s visit as it will bring “a very meaningful meeting” not only on the political level, but also on other sectors and areas that should be explored by the two nations.
After his visit to the Philippines, President Yoon will travel to Singapore on October 8-9 and then to Laos for a regional summit with Southeast Asian leaders.
