The Philippines, already with its set of challenges, has been plagued with a new enemy: the extreme heatwave. Gone are the days where Filipinos had experienced the cold and rainy weather as the heatwave had officially started on March 21, 2024.
As the temperature continues to increase drastically, the country is enduring an exceptionally high heatwave until at least mid-May.
Heat Index Classification
- Danger Level: Across at least 30 cities and municipalities in the Philippines, the heat index was forecasted to be in the danger zone as it falls under that category with temperatures ranging from 42°C to 46°C.
- Extreme Danger Level: Even if the rest of the country is sweltering in the extreme heat, there are areas that are on the extreme danger level as they are reaching 52°C or higher. Under this category, heat strokes are imminent as continued exposure can be life-threatening.
Government Protocols and Safety Measures
Given this situation, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has issued various safety advisories that are related to the management and mitigation of the extreme heatwave at work. Measures included are the following:
- Risk Assessment: The assessment of the workers’ exposure to the extreme heat.
- Workplace Assessment: The checking of adequate ventilation as well as sufficient heat insulation.
- Advocacy Campaigns: The education of workers about heat wave-related risks and its precautions.
- Flexible Work Arrangements: Adjustment of work hours of employees to limit exposure to extreme heat.
