Recent resignations from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s government by Vice President Sara Duterte have rocked Philippine politics. This long editorial explores the context, effects, and fundamental conflicts of this important choice.
Two key roles Sara Duterte filled in President Marcos Jr.’s cabinet were Secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd) and Vice Chairperson of the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict. She formally sent President Marcos her resignation letter on June 19, 2024 exactly at 2:21 PM. The President swiftly approved her choice since he understood how much this break would affect their political cooperation as well as the general running of the administration.
Formed during the 2022 elections, the alliance between Duterte-Marcos included two of the most influential political dynasties in the Philippines. With this partnership, their supporters were meant to be united and their political might consolidated. Still, the coalition had many difficulties since underlying conflicts kept it from presenting a cohesive front.
Many public conflicts revealed the cracks in the coalition. Among the main points of conflict was between Vice President Duterte and Speaker of the House Martin Romualdez, a close friend of President Marcos. Duterte’s demand for private money for the 2024 budget was turned down by the House of Representatives, which simply helped to widen their differences.
President Marcos’s intention to rejoin the International Criminal Court (ICC), a body looking at crimes of human rights, sparked still another major controversy. Further strain inside the government came from Duterte’s resistance to the ICC’s jurisdiction over the Philippines. Former President Rodrigo Duterte’s public allegation in January claiming Marcos engaged in illegal drug use aggravated this conflict. Marcos angrily refuted these claims, but the episode souring their friendship.
First Lady Liza Araneta Marcos’s observation of Vice President Duterte grinning at comments on Marcos’s influence set off more tensions. This episode made clear the developing mistrust and conflict among the two leaders.
Vice President Duterte made it plain that her departure was a moral stand rather than a display of weakness. She said her choice was motivated by a great concern for the wellbeing of teachers and young people of the Philippines, implying that the present political system was not sufficiently addressing these problems. Duterte’s leaving exposes the unstable character of political coalitions in the Philippines, therefore highlighting their complexity and difficulties.
