Selena Gomez is leaving Social Media because she’s “too old for this”

In the same week that she surpassed Kylie Jenner to become Instagram’s most followed user, Selena Gomez has once again decided it’s best for her mental health to remain away from social media.

The pop sensation declared during her Thursday TikTok Live, “I’m going to take a break from social media because this is a bit ridiculous. I am 30 years old; therefore, I am too old for this. Nonetheless, I adore you all and I shall visit you as soon as possible.”

She reassured her supporters that she is “extremely happy” and “so blessed” by stating, “I’m just going to take a break from everything.” She continued, “I have the greatest friends and admirers in the entire world, and I could not be happier. I’m fine, I like myself the way I am, and I don’t care. I’m huge, I’m not, I don’t care. I cherish who I am.”

This break begins shortly after Gomez responded to two TikTok videos featuring Justin Bieber’s wife Hailey Bieber. The Only Murders in the Building star reacted on a fan-made video featuring a since-deleted TikTok the model posted in January, which the fan assumed was a jab at Gomez, last week. Nonetheless, the musician responded to the tape by saying, “It’s fine! I do not allow these things to bring me down! Be courteous to everyone!”

Hailey also took the time to put the record straight, adding, “I never comment on this sort of thing, but it was just a random tik tok sound we created for fun during a girls’ night out. That is not directed at anyone in particular.” Earlier in the same week, the singer also remarked on a popular TikTok video of a Drop the Mic clip in which Bieber gags when Taylor Swift’s name is mentioned. Gomez stated in a remark, “So sorry, my best friend is and continues to be one of the finest in the game.”

The creator of Selena + Chef discussed her rocky connection with social media and why she ultimately opted to delegate it to her assistant in an interview with Vanity Fair this month. “I never had the opportunity to attend a traditional high school. For a very long period, the world served as my high school, and I began to be bombarded with unwanted knowledge. I went through a difficult breakup, and I didn’t want to read any [feedback]—not necessarily about the relationship, but about my vs [someone else’s] thoughts.”

Gomez added, “There would be dozens of extremely nice remarks, but my mind immediately goes to the negative one. People can call me ugly or stupid, but I don’t care. But, these people are specific. They compose sentences that are so detailed and harsh. I would continuously cry. I constantly felt anxious… I could no longer continue. It was a complete waste of my time.”

She continued, “Now, the only app I have on my phone is TikTok because I find it to be less antagonistic. There are amazing aspects of social networking, such as engaging with people, witnessing their happiness and excitement, and hearing their tales. Yet, that is typically filtered out [for me now]. I established a system. Whatever I accomplish is sent to my helper, who then posts it. Regarding feedback, my staff will compile a few encouraging statements.”
