Squid Game’ set to overtake ‘Bridgerton’ as Netflix’s most popular non-English series

ASEAN – Netflix has scored another success with the new Korean series Squid Game, which is on track to become the streaming service’s highest-rated series of all time.

According to co-CEO Ted Sarandos, the Korean dystopian horror thriller is on pace to become the streaming service’s most popular program in a language other than English.

Sarandos, who is also Netflix’s president of programming, made the remarks Monday at the Code Conference in Los Angeles, according to Cnet.

He said that there is a very strong possibility that this will be their largest exhibition to date.

He did not specify the metric used to determine the series’ popularity, but Netflix determines its popularity by counting the number of views within the first 28 days after a title’s premiere.

Netflix revealed its top 10 original series and films earlier this week, based on the first 28 days of a title’s availability.

According to data, Bridgerton season one was the most popular program, clocking in at 625 million hours, followed by a Spanish series, Money Heist part 4, clocking in at 619 million hours.

Squid Game’s nine-episode run is likely to surpass Bridgerton as Netflix’s most popular series.

Squid Game debuted on September 17, garnering about 11 days of viewing by the time Sarandos spoke.

Director Hwang Dong Hyuk previously said that he got the concept for the series in 2008 from a comic book depicting individuals who engage in extreme sports, but he did not disclose the title of the comic, according to reports.Squid Game has been compared to the 2014 Japanese film As The Gods Will, which is also about a death competition using childhood games and has similar scenes.
