Syed Saddiq: Undi18 will shake Malaysian politics

Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, who is the MP of Muar, has praised the judgment of the High Court in Kuching, Sarawak, which ordered the government and the Election Commission (EC) to broaden the right to vote to individuals aged 18 and over by the end of the calendar year.

Former youth and sports minister stated in a statement that the decision was in accordance with the constitutional amendment to decrease the voting age from 21 to 18, which was passed by Parliament in 2019 with a unanimous majority.

“Today, millions of young people have triumphed. A political earthquake that will alter the landscape of Malaysian politics for the foreseeable future.

Taking to Twitter, he expressed his gratitude to the youths who had taken the government to court. “Today, they have won for millions of youths,” he said.

The prime minister, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, and the attorney general, Tan Sri Idrus Azizan Harun, were also asked not to challenge today’s judgment, but rather to guarantee that the reduced voting age be implemented.

When the Undi18 resolution was approved in the Dewan Rakyat by a majority vote of its members, Prime Minister Ismail Sabri served as both the leader of the opposition and the leader of the government.

According to him, it is suitable for Undi18 to be implemented at the earliest opportunity during the implementation stage of the Election Commission’s implementation stage.

The High Court in Kuching, Sarawak, decided just recently that the government and the Election Commission must take measures to implement Undi18 by the end of this year to allow Malaysians aged 18 to vote in the next elections rather than having to wait until they are 21. EC and government officials were found to have behaved “illegally” and “irrationally” when they chose to postpone the implementation of Undi18 from the originally scheduled date of July 2021 to September 2022, according to High Court judicial commissioner Alexander Siew How Wai.
