Thai transgender cabaret reopens following pandemic closure

After being forced to find other means to make ends meet due to the coronavirus outbreak, transgender performers at one of Thailand’s most famous cabaret acts have returned to the spotlight for the first time in around three years.

Peerapong “Bee” Butakul, one of the performers, mentioned that she had turned to selling chicken rice during this time period and that she was happy to return to the stage this week.

The chief executive officer of Tiffany’s Show Pattaya, Alisa Phanthusak, stated that the majority of bookings at the present were coming from locals, which meant that there were less shows scheduled than in the past.

Normally, the cabarets are a popular attraction among tourists from other countries, but Thailand’s tourism industry is still in the process of recuperating. Due to the pandemic, the number of people arriving from other countries fell to a record low of 428,000 in 2018, compared to approximately 40 million in 2019.
