Attending the signing of a historic Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between the United Arab Emirates and Australia, H.H. Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahaney, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs for the UAE, and Penny Wong, the Australian Minister of Foreign Affairs, took part in a historic step for world trade. Signing a fresh chapter in UAE-Australia relations, this agreement is the first of kind between Australia and any Middle Eastern country. Reflecting a shared commitment to development, innovation, and sustainability, the CEPA is prepared to strengthen trade routes, increase investment flows, and stimulate cooperation between the private sectors of both countries.
Canberra held the signing event during Sheikh Abdullah’s official Australian tour. Officially signing the agreement were Australia Minister of Trade and Tourism, Don Farrell; UAE Minister of State for Foreign Trade, Dr. Thani Bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi. Senior officials from both countries, including UAE Ambassador to Australia Dr. Fahad Obaid Mohamed Altaffag Almarashda and Assistant Minister for Economic and Commercial Affairs Saeed Mubarak Al Hajri, attesting to the significance and high-level commitment to this new relationship.
The CEPA is meant to significantly expand the spectrum of business activities between Australia and the UAE. Aiming to achieve US$15 billion by 2032, from US$4.23 billion recorded in 2023 once approved it is predicted to quadruple non-oil trade between the two countries. This agreement is intended to accelerate bilateral trade growth, open new market access for businesses, and promote economic diversification as both countries gain from a streamlined flow of goods, services, and investments.
His Superscience Regarding the agreement, Sheikh Abdullah claimed it marks a major advancement in UAE-Australia relations. “The signature of this CEPA marks our will to create bridges of cooperation and mutual benefit,” he remarked. With strong ties in trade, culture, and sports, Australia has always been a consistent economic partner. This agreement will improve these ties and give our businesses great opportunities for development and cooperation. The UAE regards this CEPA as a tool for enhancing not only social but also cultural and commercial exchanges, therefore fostering a robust and long-lasting collaboration.
UAE trade with Australia has shown notable rise recently. Ten times the same in 2023, bilateral non-oil trade rose US$2.3 billion in the first half of 2024 alone. Still Australia’s main commercial partner in the Middle East, the UAE comes in 20th globally. By 2023 the two nations had committed over US$14 billion in one another’s economy. More than 300 Australian companies, already running in the UAE across sectors including construction, finance, agriculture, and education show the great range of potential present in both markets.
Renowned for its commitment to shared global concerns and sustainability is the UAE-Australia CEPA. Run across the treaty are dedicated chapters tackling pressing issues such as environmental preservation, women’s empowerment, sustainable agriculture, food systems, and animal welfare. This focus on sustainability allows both countries’ economic goals to be more in line with more broad worldwide projects toward social responsibility and environmental preservation.
Six more agreements were signed during the UAE team visit outside the CEPA. Comprising five Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) to support and facilitate two-way investment in important sectors, these also included a comprehensive Agreement to Promote and Protect Investments between the UAE and Australia. Among the priorities covered by these Memoranda of Understanding are Green and Renewable Energy, Infrastructure Development, Data Centers and Artificial Intelligence, Minerals and Mining, Food and Agriculture. By pushing investment in these fundamental areas, both nations are laying the road for a future grounded in resilience, creativity, and sustainability.
This enhanced cooperation in sustainable industries emphasizes Australia’s and the United Arab Emirates’ common will to address global challenges including food security and climate change. Apart from matching with the UAE’s aim for economic diversification, the focus on green energy and sustainable development under the CEPA and supporting agreements reflects Australia’s strategic aims in establishing a more resilient and sustainable economy.
A cornerstone of UAE long-term economic development strategy, the UAE-Australia CEPA is a significant part of the country’s ambitious CEPA program. The UAE aspires to double its GDP by 2031 to surpass US$800 billion and increase trade volume to US$1 trillion. Initiated in September 2021, the CEPA project has already broadened UAE economic influence globally by way of regions spanning the Middle East, Africa, Southeast Asia, South America, and Eastern Europe, therefore impacting approximately 25% of the world population.
The UAE has thus so far successfully established CEPAs with various countries, hence improving its profile as a key international base of trade and investment. Every agreement under the CEPA program is meant to maximize opportunities for growth, encourage innovation, and match with sustainable practices. Through this program, the UAE keeps growing a global network of economic partnerships, therefore building linkages supporting world cooperation and common prosperity.
With the UAE-Australia CEPA, UAE-Australia relations open a new chapter marked by better opportunities and tighter linkages between businesses and local communities. As both countries work to ratify and use this agreement, they have significant economic potential to be released, therefore creating the route for more innovation, sustainability, and resilience in critical industries. With its broad influence, the CEPA is supposed to improve trade as well as strengthen the social and cultural relations between Australia and the UAE.
Unlike just a commercial agreement, this historic accord is a declaration of mutual commitment and confidence. Now among a limited number of nations the UAE has established a CEPA, Australia stands to gain from increased market access and a more safe trading relationship. In terms of sustainability as well as in terms of international trade and as a forerunner in creating mutually beneficial connections all around, the UAE keeps positioning itself as a leader.
As world economies become ever connected, the UAE’s CEPA with Australia is proof of the strength of international cooperation and forward-looking economic policies. This agreement establishes the groundwork for a rich future grounded in cooperation, invention, and sustainable growth, therefore benefiting both businesses and individuals.
