PUTRAJAYA – Should the Parliament gets dissolved in the stir of current political restructuring, the Election Commission (EC) is prepared to conduct an early general election.

Chairman Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun states that Article 55(4) of the Federal Constitution stipulates that general elections must be held within 60 days of the dissolution of Parliament by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

Approximately, the snap election will cost around RM750mil and RM800mil, compared to RM500mil spent on the 14th general election held two years ago.

Agar said that the increase of cost cannot be avoided because EC plans to continue with the upgrades undertaken for the 10 by-elections held after the 14th general election. A total of 8,839 voting centres and 29,054 voting channels were opened across Malaysia during the 14th general election, with 600,417 books of ballot papers and 88,113 bottles of indelible ink made available.

The upgrades also mentioned additional voting places and channels, and also centers of a special channel for special needs people (OKU).

They will also provide wheelchairs and shuttle services for senior citizens and with special needs.

He also said that the EC would issue media statements and updates based on current developments to steer clear from fake news. The public can reach the website on www.spr.gov.my or Facebook page or call the EC at 03-8892 7200.
