Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) maintained its position as the leading university in the Philippines, one of five Philippine institutions to make it into this year’s Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Rankings.
According to the most recent rankings from THE Asia, which were released on Wednesday, May 1, ADMU fell around 300 positions from last year’s 84th spot and landed in the 401-500 category this year.
After falling roughly 300 places from last year’s 201-250, the institution of the Philippines (UP) was once again declared the second best-performing institution in the country after placing in the 501-600 category. UP has consistently topped the country’s universities in most foreign evaluations.

The University of the Philippines (UP) and De La Salle University are tied for second place, with both universities falling inside the 501-600 ranking range.
In the current year, the University of Santo Tomas and Mapúa University both achieved a rating in the 601+ bracket. Mapúa University maintained its position in this bracket, while the University of Santo Tomas just joined it. UST was just given the designation of “reporter” in the regional ranking last year.
A “reporter” refers to a college or institution that provides data to THE (Times Higher Education), but does not meet the criteria to be ranked.

Reporter status was awarded to four institutions in the Philippines: Central Luzon State University, Mariano Marcos State University, Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology, and the University of Eastern Philippines.
They are joining five other institutions that also had reporters this year: Cebu Technological University, Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology, University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines, Tarlac Agricultural University, and Visayas State University.
This year’s rating included 739 institutions spread across 31 regions on the continent.
Five main performance indicators—teaching quality, research environment, research quality, worldwide view, and industry involvement—are used to evaluate institutions in the rankings.
ADMU was the best performer overall, receiving the top ratings in industry, research quality, and teaching.
Indications suggest that higher education systems in some nations within the area may be seeing enhancements. According to the 2024 Asia rankings briefer by THE, while not all Asian nations have a university that ranks well, many are seeing a growing number of schools being rated each year.
